Imam (a.s.)’s order to an Angel

Safwan bin Yahya narrates that Abdi said:

My wife said: It is a long time since we visited Imam Sadiq (a.s.). We must go for Hajj this year and visit Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) as well. I said: By God, I have no means of traveling for Hajj. But my wife said: Sell my garments, gold and jewels to fund the journey. I did that and we set out for Mecca. When we reached near Medina, my wife fell seriously ill; in such a way that she was on the verge of death and I lost all hopes for her survival.

When we entered Medina, I left her alone and having lost all hope that she would live, came to Imam Sadiq (a.s.). His Eminence was wearing two colored garments. I greeted the Imam and narrated our condition.

Imam (a.s.) said: “Are you aggrieved because of this?” “Yes,” I replied.

Imam (a.s.) said: “I have supplicated and she has regained health. Go back and you would find her sitting; while your slave girl is giving her Tabarzad sugar.” (Tabarzad is a sugar, which is boiled, then mixed with a little milk and again boiled till it is dissolved properly. It is commonly known as red sugar.) I returned immediately to find what the Imam had predicted. I asked the wife what she had gone through. She said: “Almighty Allah has bestowed health to me.” I said: I made haste to meet you to narrate a matter and I explained the incident between me and Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.).

She said: When you went away, I saw myself on the verge of death. A man came in two colored garments and asked about my condition. I said: “I am on the verge of death and the angel of death has arrived to capture my soul.”

He said: “O angel of death.” He replied: “Here I am, O rightful Imam. Imam (a.s.) said: “Are you not commanded to obey me?” “Yes, “ he replied. Imam (a.s.) said: “I command you to delay capturing her soul for twenty years.” He said: “I obey.” Then that master went out along with the angel of death and I regained health.

It is narrated from Huzaifah bin Usaid Ghiffari who said: When Hasan bin Ali bade farewell to Muawiyah and left for Medina, I accompanied him in his journey, and there was a loaded camel in front of him, not separating from him wherever he headed. One day I said to him, ‘May I be sacrificed for you, O Abu Muhammad! This luggage, you do not separate from it wherever you are headed.’ He said: ‘O Huzaifah! Do you know what it is?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said: ‘This is the register.’ I said, ‘A register of what?’ He said: ‘Register of our Shias wherein are their names.’ I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you! Show me my name.’ He said: ‘Come in the morning.’ He said: ‘I went to him in the morning and with me was a nephew of mine, and he was literate and I could not read. He said: ‘What have you come for in the morning?’ I said, ‘The need which you promised me.’ He said: ‘Who is that youth with you?’ I said, ‘A nephew of mine, and he is literate, and I am not.’ He (the narrator) said, ‘He said to me: ‘Be seated!’ So, I sat down. He said: ‘Get me the middle register.’ I came with it.’ The youth looked and there were names listed. While he was reading, he said, ‘O uncle! Here is my name!’ I said, ‘May your mother be bereft of you!
